60 years of AXA

From craft business to high-tech machine manufacturer

On 15 June 1965, brothers Antonius and Heinrich Kappelhoff laid the foundation stone for the AXA company. What began as a small trade business specialising in plumbing and heating technology quickly developed further. After just a few years, the company reached its spatial limits - a second site was built, where pumps, control systems and fittings were manufactured from then on. The machines required for this were developed and manufactured in-house.

This technical expertise proved to be a decisive advantage in the early 1970s: the heating industry came under pressure due to the oil price crisis - but AXA recognised a new opportunity. The machines developed in-house also met with interest outside the company and were sold successfully.

Exactly ten years after its foundation, a strategic step was taken in June 1975: the split into two independent companies. While AXA Maschinen und Armaturen continued to concentrate on its original core business, the newly founded AXA Entwicklungs- und Maschinenbau GmbH focussed on the design and development of machine tools.

Today, AXA Entwicklungs- und Maschinenbau GmbH is a medium-sized company with around 320 employees and is one of the leading manufacturers of highly complex machine tools for the national and international market. The focus is on machining centres in portal and travelling column design as well as on the production of key components such as rotary tables, spindles and counter bearings. Another important business area is special machine construction.

Thanks to an exceptionally high in-house vertical range of manufacture, AXA can flexibly develop and realise individual customer solutions - a unique selling point that still distinguishes AXA today.
