Travelling column machining centre HSC

The horizontal machining centre

Advantages of a horizontal spindle

Horizontal machining centres are machine tools equipped with a horizontally aligned spindle, capable of combining milling, drilling, and turning operations. They are ideal for the precise and rapid complete machining of large, complex workpieces.

  • Milling with a horizontal spindle offers excellent rigidity and stability due to the horizontal positioning of the tool. Shorter tools with larger diameters can often be used, which also reduces vibrations—even during deep cutting operations.
  • Thanks to their robust design and more favourable force distribution, these machines are particularly well suited for heavy-duty machining and for working on large, flat surfaces.
  • The horizontal spindle arrangement allows gravity to assist with chip evacuation. This improves tool life and process reliability—especially when machining deep pockets or holes—and results in cleaner surface finishes. Chips fall directly downwards rather than becoming trapped in the cutting zone. This prevents chips from being cut again and enhances surface quality.
  • Particularly in demanding machining operations, the machine's design ensures rigidity and stability even during high-speed cutting operations, making these machines ideal for larger components with tight tolerances. When combined with rotary tables, multiple sides of a workpiece can be machined in a single setup. This increases accuracy and reduces setup times.
