A complete truck inside our UPFZ

At first glance, it looked rather unusual. But there was a simple reason: the base console of a 27-ton truck-mounted crane with a 60-metre boom required precision rework – while already fully assembled.

The base console forms the massive foundation of the crane and must safely absorb the enormous forces generated during lifting operations. Even the slightest deviation required precise machining. Dismantling the crane, however, was simply not an option.

The solution: our large gantry machining centre (UPFZ) at AXA's headquarters in Schöppingen.

Designed specifically for exceptionally large and heavy workpieces, the UPFZ is built without a conventional machine bed. Instead, the necessary water channels, clamping facilities and machine enclosure are integrated directly into the machine foundation. Under normal circumstances, the UPFZ machines heavy AXA machine beds. This time, however, it was machining a truck.

The truck was carefully reversed beneath the portal, precisely aligned, and the surface of the mounted base console was machined with minimal material removal.

A truly exceptional application – even for us. And once again, a striking demonstration of the flexibility and capabilities of AXA machining centres.
